« Texture Tuesday - A Few Past Favs... | Main | Everyday Ben - Takes a Bath.... »

I'm Still Here - Honest I

My dear friends

Thank you so much for all the sweet emails asking if everything is okay.

I have fallen off the map this past week!

I wanted to share why..... My very sweet Aunt passed away on Saturday.  She had been fighting cancer for some time....But, she is resting now, thankfully.

She was such a strong and courageous woman...  Auntie Marg never had children of her own.......but she loved and cared for all of her nieces and nephews.... We live in the same town, so my boys were blessed to spend a lot of time with their Auntie Marg.  She was so good to all of us.

I am so sad to see her gone...but so thankful to have had all these years with her....and very thankful we could be with her in her final days.

So, that's where i have been.  I've missed you all!

I missed the Friday texture...first time since I started sharing textures on Fridays.  I will be back this coming Friday with at least one fab texture for you all!  I promise!!

I took Ben and Sophie on the trail today.... it was nice to be alone with my thoughts, my camera and the puppies....

I wanted to share a few of the pics with you today....and also let you know that the Everyday Ben page will be up asap... I promise.  I can't wait to have it up and get the flickr group going....  So stay tune.

I'm so in love with Mr. Ben.... and I am so happy we found each other.  He's so darn sweet!

There is one little problem..... when we adopted him, my cousin said he was starting to be destructive when he was home alone.  Anyhow, Ben is pretty much with me 24/7 so he didn't have a chance to get into trouble. So, this past week, he has been home alone a little bit while we have been at the hospital etc.  And he has been really naughty......  He does things like empty the bathroom garbage, drags my clothes out of the bedroom closet....  he tore apart a pizza box, ripped open a bag of  his puppy treats..... and ate them all.......yikes!!  So, what should we do?  Kennel?  I hate the thoughts of that....  But honestly, I can't stay home for the rest of my life either....  The other night when he tore up the pizza box....and I was standing there looking at the mess... I said quite firmly.... 'Ben'... he picked up a piece of the box to show me with his tail wagging..  He's so cute and angelic looking....and I'm putty in his paws.....  'sigh'.....  Anyhow, if you have suggestions I am open!!  Do tell!

Okay, my friends.... I must sign off.  I have lots of catching up to do.

Although this next week is going to be a little hit and miss... I will definitely pop back in a few days!

Happy Week ahead....  talk soon....xxo, kim

OH Kim - I am so very sorry for your loss. Yes, your dear aunt's suffering is over but it's still very hard for you. You and your family have my deepest sympathy. On a lighter note, those dogs are so dang adorable. Someone commented in the skinny mini about how they like hearing your phone ring - makes you one of us. I love hearing the clicking of Ben's toe nails. We have a year old yellow lab who's face is as beautiful as Ben's. I have no suggestions as to how to make him behave. Ours are outside dogs so we don't have that problem. Good luck.

I am so sorry to hear about your aunt. My husband had two aunts like her; neither had children of their own but had lots of neices and nephews that they loved as their own. Be firm with Ben and he will "outgrow" this. You may have to kennel him for a bit, but he'll get the idea and be able to stay out when you are gone.

I have enjoyed your textures, blog and photography very much. I look forward to taking the Skinny Mini course over because I fell so far behind I did not have time to catch up.

I'm so sorry to hear about your aunt. This past summer, I also lost an aunt I was very close with. It's comforting to know they're in a better place with no more sickness.

As far as doggie behavior, a good friend of mine had similar problems with her boxer. The advice she got was to crate train him but to be sure it's not seen by the dog as a punishment. She made the crate a cozy place with some padded bedding and toys. She would put him in the crate while she was still home and let him relax and get used to it and see that it's not a bad thing. After doing that for a while, she started leaving him in it when she left the house. The consistency worked b/c he's now at the point where he happily goes into the crate whenever "mommy" is leaving!

We have a big GoldenDoodle and two other dogs. I installed a gate that we did screw in to the entryway door frame (and it has a swinging door that I can walk through - latches shut) but they have plastic gates that suction to the sides of standard entryways. There is NO way I could let them have free range of the house when I'm gone. I have a small area off he kitchen, just outside of the laundry room and that is where they stay when I leave the house. If I am gone for a very short time, I will leave one dog out. It has worked out quite well. You can google them - there are all kinds.

Well , God rest her soul. I still miss my aunties. They are so special.
As far as Ben goes, my sis does the same thing as Stephanie suggested, and her dog is the same, quite happy in his spot. Can you not leave him outside? Does he have an outside pen?
He is not only sweet and good company for you, he is the most photogenic dog around!

So sorry to hear about your aunt. I'm sure the walk alone with the two pups was a good way to clear the mind.

Well, about Ben's mischief. My Henry is almost 10 and he still on occasion gets into the trash when we are gone. We just never know when it will be. He does have a liking for the bathroom trash too. Ewww! He even ate all the corn cobs one time and I had to induce vomiting on the poor thing. But it saved a trip to the vet. I would try to limit his area that he is in.

so very sorry for your loss ..I know how hard it to let go..

your pups are so very beautiful mixed in with the snow..not a better backdrop than that for your photogenic pups! We have never done the kennel ..although I have friends that swear by it, it became like a safe place ..home so to speak for there dog.

I am taking a red or gray break but will continue Sunday Sh0ps and if I may post a 3x3 on the 30th!! blessing my talented friend!!

Kim, First, I'm so sorry for your loss. Saying goodbye is never easy. But I loved your sentiments on how blessed you were to have her all these years. Every special person in our lives leaves their imprints on our hearts forever. No doubt it was such a comfort for all of you to be able to be there for her during her final days.

And about that sweet little Ben!!! We have a Lab who just turned two and she went through a long phase of being a little stinker when it came to getting into stuff. I could only tell another dog lover the amount of destruction we endured during this process. But kennel training helped a lot. We used the kennel for about a year both at night and whenever we all left the house. Then gradually began leaving her out when I ran to the grocery store, etc. and kept increasing the time she was left unattended. About six months ago, we pretty much quit using the kennel all together as she no longer needed it.

To get her used to the kennel in the beginning, we would put her in it for short spurts of time while we were in the room with her. The trainer we consulted said to kennel her right after she'd been excercised, fed and pottied so that she would be more apt to associate the kennel with a time of rest. He also stressed that rather than think of the kennel as a punishment, to think of it as providing a safe place for your doggie while you are away. Dogs who are prone to getting into things have a higher likelihood of getting into something that could be harmful to them.

We still have gates blocking the upstairs to the teenager rooms as we have been less than successful in teaching the two legged children not to leave stuff out that might be tempting to a four legged child!

Ben's a lucky little boy to have found such a wonderful home!
xo, Sue

These ugg boots are extremely comfortable to wear and because of this you may find yourself wearing UGGS alot. Which is all well and good until cheap ugg boots start to get dirty and start to smell. Certainly one way of making sure that your Cheap Uggs remaining look good is by using a specialist cleaning product which has been designed for use on leather and suede items. The great site that discount ugg boots online.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss, Kim. It is never easy to lose a loved one, but her memories will obviously live on in you and your boys whom she shared so much joy with through the years in each of your lives. Her footprints continue on... May the comfort of knowing she is now at peace bring you through this time of loss.

It's amazing how our pets react to our busy lives and getting out of their normal routines. They surely depend on our love and affection as well as time, and let us know when things aren't the norm with their acting out. Our kitten does the same type of thing. It sounds as though you've gotten some wonderful suggestions from others that have successfully worked their way through these challenges as well.

I hope your week is more peaceful and you are soon able to be back doing what you enjoy in the company of your two loyal companions. Your photos of your dogs are always so awesome, and as someone else mentioned, Ben seems to thrive like a little child with having his photo taken. How cute is that?

Dear Kim, I am so sorry for your loss. I'm thinking of you...

Ben is so adorable. Really really. Have you tried crate training? Is that what you meant by kennel? He will love it- give him a peanut butter kong to keep him entertained- with the crate he will learn to sleep when you are gone. Once he is a little older you won't need it anymore. My dog loves her crate. We put a blanket over it so it's like a cave. She doesn't need it now when we leave but still goes in it to sleep probably at least once a day.

Sending love to you and your family....

Kim so sorry to hear about your Aunt and the hard time this weekend has been for you and your family, such bitter sweet. Time some time to be with loved ones and yourself to clear your thoughts and feelings together. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers as I understand the toughness of this all.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss.

As far as Ben in concerned, I can't recommend crate training enough. I have a Jack Russell ( a breed known for the naughty, wild, rambunctious ways). I get compliments ALL THE TIME on his behavior, how calm he is compared to other Jack Russells, etc.

He is crated when we are out of the house more than a few hours, and at night. If we do leave him out, he howls. He feels safer and more content in there.

Just my two cents.

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAunt Baaa

Two suggestions for working with Ben... Use baby gates to limit the area he can roam in when "home alone" so you can clear the decks of any possible things he might chew up and use a Kong... they sell them at Target, PetSmart, and online too. They are rubber chew toys that have hollow insides but Here's the key... Put some chopped up carrots or apples in there with cream cheese or peanut butter ( you can use his regular food and water, too ) stuff it well and FREEZE it... That's the key. Because when you freeze it, it takes them about an hour to eat it. It's like a pupsicle! This works for my dog really well. Email me if you have any questions! Good luck...

I am so sorry for your loss Kim. It sounds like she was a grand lady.
As far as Ben is concerned...Crate training. It may be a little hard at first (more for you than him!), but they do get used to it, and pretty much come to expect it when you are not home. Just last week when I went out, I forgot to put my little one in her crate. The door to the crate was open, and when I came home, she was inside her crate, sound asleep.

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterlisa

Dear Kim,

My most sincere condolences on your dear Aunt Marg's passing. Yet, she will always be with you in memory. My dear ones are.

As for the bad puppy..., I agree with the crate training. I also have had success with making the pup very happy that you are leaving (a lot of the destruction is abandonment issues). In my case, I say, "Time to Go!" and my bad girl runs into the kitchen for her Kong toy filled with peanut butter (straight from the freezer or fridge). Keeps them busy for hours. As she's grown older (and less destructive) a full-sized dentastix will do it. Now, she practically begs me to leave!!

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLori

I too am very sorry to hear of your loss, Kim. But as you said, she is resting now.

And I totally agree with the crate training. And not to worry, it's more of a puppy thing than grown up dog thing. And I agree with the peanut butter in the kong idea! I never tried the frozen version but sounds perfect.

Oh Kim, I am so sorry to hear about your aunt. Sending hugs to you.

Yes, crate training is almost always the way to keep puppies from being destructive. My sister works at a vet, and they are always advocating that method. and usually they will outgrow it later anyway...but i know what you mean, they can't be so darn cute even when they are naughty....

My heart felt sympathy regarding your Aunt's passing - Bless her.

Seems like lots of advice re crating....and I totally agree. Our Bella, Golden Retriever, is 1.5 years old and goodness what she can get into. We finally purchased a crate...but it's not a wire's made out of heavy-duty canvas and it's portable....easy pop-up and tear down. We just say "let's go to bed" and she knows it's lights out; plus we put her into her home when we're away. If you want to know the name of the canvas crate, I can look it up. Ben's puppy stage will soon pass.

Dear Kim, I am so sorry for your loss *warm hug* Saying goodbye is always so hard...
My mom's aunt Sandra was a bit like yours: no kids of her own, but an amazing woman, always there for me and my cousins. She will always be with me in my memory, like your aunt Marg with be in yours and your boys memory.
Your pups are adorable in the snow, such a joy to watch. :)
Have a happy week!

Kim, I am just now catching up on your posts and I am sorry to hear about your aunt. I am sure she felt very lucky to have the love of you and your family around her in her final days. As far as the puppy goes... this is the story of Bennie. A curious little Boston Terrier that my husband got me in the last month of my last pregnancy. I was lucky enough to have 3 months of maternity leave, so basically, we were inseparable for those 4 months. Once I started having to go back to work, I noticed a change in his behavior and demeanor as soon as my "getting ready for work" routine began each morning. He would shut down and crawl under my bed shivering. Nothing except a broom could get him out. After many days of coming home to find our house destroyed, we instituted crate training. It was hard at first, but it was for my sanity and for his safety. in the end, he loved his crate. We were never able to snap him out of the daily anxiety of my leaving the house, despite various treatments and medications. I think crate training is definitely the best way to go, but I just want you to be aware that there are some dogs that suffer from separation anxiety and they exhibit it by destructive behavior when their human is away. I doubt your dog has this, but I just want to make you aware of it so you can be on the look out for signs of something beyond regular puppy naughtiness.

It’s a film called Hungry for You and it’s in pre-production now. I play the lead vampire. I didn’t want to be a vampire but was forced into it so I’m struggling with my vampire powers and not wanting to turn the girl I love into a vampire. The script is really great and has a wonderful storyline. It’s been fun. The creator, Linda Andersson, has a really cool comic strip of Hungry for You that she is going to release soon. It’s sort of a teaser and a way to start the marketing for the project in a bigger level.
