Sweet Ben - An Update

Thank you all so much for your positive thoughts and prayers....

We all appreciate much!

Ben is doing well.  The vet is confident that there has been no permanent nerve damage.

He can't stand up on his own and the damage  to his pelvis is quite severe. But he is eating and going to the bathroom (at least #1).  They are going to help him out a little with #2 today. She believes he's probably nervous to try as it's so tendered. And because he isn't eating as much as normal and inactive that won't be helping move things.  So she is going to give him a laxative.  But the vet is confident that he will be okay in that area.  Apparently his sweet little tail is wagging as per usual and he has lots of feeling in his hind end.  I hope that's not too much information.....

We are waiting for word from the Ortho Specialist in Winnipeg. Our vet assures us that the specialist is very good and will only do the surgery if he is confident that it will be the best possible outcome for Ben. Unfortunately the cost is going to be even more than estimated. 'sigh'

It's all up in the air right now...but the surgery might not be until Wednesday.... So it looks like we will be able to have him home with us for a few days.  'sigh'

But oh my gosh, I could not love this little boy more.... Not a day goes by that we don't marvel over his cuteness, his sweetness, his quirky little personality.... He does the cutest things...  Like when someone comes to the door, whether it's company or one of us... he bolts to the door with a toy or old sock in mouth to show them....then proceeds to parade around the entrance, proudly showing it off....  It's really funny when it's a ripped up old sock....  He's so proud!!  Whenever you talk to him he tilts his head back and forth as if to say, what mommy?  what are you saying?  When my cell phone beeps, he tilts his little head as if to say, who was that?  It's cuteness ....BEYOND....

After he was hit by the truck, my brother came over to see him.  He thought he must be okay as Ben was lying there wagging his tail.  When the vet was poking and prodding he was just there, with his little nose in her face giving her little kisses.  You can't help but love him.

And I swear he was born to be photographed.  He will pose for the camera in a second.  He's truly the sweetest gift.  And I can't imagine our world without him.

So we must find a way to get him well. Please continue to pray for us...  as we wait for the details and figure it all out.

We are all so very grateful.

much love and gratitude.....xxo, Kim

Glad to hear things are looking up for Ben! I hope they continue to do so. Eating is a good sign. So, the doctor doesn't think he will be able to go #2? You had said the doctor thought he would not be okay in that area. What will they be able to do for him about that? Poor guy! He certainly was born loving the camera. I wish I could get Henry to not turn away from it! Ben is just a natural :)

So glad to receive this update. It is good news!! Your love for Ben is palpable - that alone will surely support and heal him. Love and light going out to you both.

Kim, I sit here typing with my sweet Tulip (Maltese) on my lap. Tulip greets us with a toy when we come home too. I think it's a celebration for her! I love the way you described Ben. Whenever I look at the pictures you post of Ben's eyes, I practically melt. He has very expressive eyes. Surely God has more plans for Ben on this earth! So glad things are looking up. Our prayers for Ben won't stop until he is healed. I appreciate anything you wish to share. Thank you for letting us in on your life. Blessings!

encouraging news for your sweet doggie ...

December 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterS.Etole

There's a cafe in the Hamilton, Ont. area called My Dog Joe. Joe apparently got into a disagreement with a sick raccoon and got some kind of distemper. The vets said he should be put down but of course the owners said no way. He had virtually no feeling or movement in his back end. They created a kind of sling and wheels affair and took him for walks every day until eventually he was able to walk on his own. I've seen My Dog Joe (totally walking on his own) and I believe that we and our dogs are most resilient creatures.
We all love Ben so I wouldn't worry about finances.

I'm so glad for the good news! I'm sorry to hear the surgery will be costly, but he sounds like he's totally worth the cost! After all, he's your fur baby! I'm so happy for you Kim! Hang in there!

December 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLotus

Such good news for now.....hopefully all will end well. Its truly amazing to me how these unconditional creatures just curl right up in our hearts and stay there.

Thank you for the update, Kim! Good news, and looking for it to get better and better. Kisses to Ben.

Dear Kim, Thank you for the update on 'our' Ben. I have been unsettled all morning not knowing how he was faring, so I am glad to hear that he's doing as well as can be. I also have a dear sweet yellow lab named Sugar, who is going on 12 and your description of Ben wagging his tail at the vet and giving kisses to the doctor, made me cry. We have much to learn from our animals. Hang in there. Wag your tail. And I'm sending healing wishes to Ben.

December 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCindy M

I'm glad to hear that it doesn't look too bad! I'll keep my fingers crossed! As for the costs I'm sure we all would love to buy a "Ben's recovery texture" ;-) I definitely would!

Hi Kim,

I am so relieved to hear Ben is doing well. I do hope he recovers soon. He's such a handsome dog and I can tell from his eyes that he is a sweet, lovely dog. Hugs for Ben.

I think Ben's fan club is just as huge as "Kim's Fan Club" and Kim's Fan Club is quite LARGE! I kept checking my google reader all day yesterday looking for an update on your little boy. That is such good news on there not being any nerve damage. What a sweetie still giving out kisses despite all he's been through. Keeping little Ben and your family and a creative way to finance his Vet bills in my prayers. Xo

Oh Kim i just read about Ben and I am sending warm healing thoughts his way...I feel I have gotten to know him by listening to his pattering feet in the background of your of my favorite part of your classes I have to say:) I am glad to read that his prognosis sounds pretty good. Aren't animals amazing when it comes to pain and suffering..they will still wag their tails....

December 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGail

Thank heavens. I have been checking in, hoping now news was good news. Maybe you should create a link to help out with the surgery bill. I, for one, would not be adverse to contributing, perhaps even for some Ben-inspired textures? Just a suggestion. I am gladdened that the news is positive. I have grown to love this guy too and I'm not even in his presence!

December 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKim

Oh I hope your sweet Ben is up and about and showing off his old torn sock soon. I am so sorry that he (and you) are going through this. Wishing the best for you.

Oh Kim!

I am so sorry. It sounds like, hopefully, he will be okay. I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Hugs and kisses to Ben too.

Kim, I found a lovely suprprise today, well, actually, I found two...both from you. One was an email and one was a comment on my photo with the advice that it was featured today...I was so thrilled. And then I came over to your blog and found your recent posts about Ben which I had not seen until now. Oh nooooooo! Your news of poor Ben has moved me to tears. I'm such a sap for doggies! And to think your poor Ben has had to endure this injury...ohhhh my! And what you all must be going through! I'm holding all of you in my heart and offering healing prayers for Ben and the strength you need to cope. I just don't think there is a worse pain than when our four legged friends are injured or in pain...they can't talk and those beseeching eyes of theirs just say it all! Thank you for your kind words and deed today and I pray that all will be well!

December 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnnette

Kim, I am praying fast and furious. I know your loss of Andy and I know how your heart was filled by Ben. I believe in miracles, and he's yours, so hang tight - he'll be fine. I'll keep praying til you tell us he's good. We are all here for you.

December 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJo Nelson

Your Ben photos are absolutely wonderful! Glad he's doing a little better. (No warm-blooded creatures for me...I had a terrible time when our iguana pet of 14 years had to be euthanized because of illness.)

December 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterEvelyn in Oregon

So glad that Ben is doing better. My lab tore a tendon in his leg this summer. It was heartbreaking to have him go through surgery. All went well and he is his own self now. I know that Ben will do great!!!!!

December 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSue

so glad he is home and in a familiar place, he must be so much more content. We will keep praying him.

Sorry to hear about Ben. Praying for your family and him.

Poor sweet Ben. I really hope everything will be okay. We are putting our sweet girl to sleep tomorrow. Her name is Comet. This day has been on the horizon for a while now and the inevitable must happen. I will miss her so much. There will never be another one like her. We adopted her when she was five and she was and is the best trained dog in the world. Her love of the outdoors and taking a walk couldn't be beat. I;m not looking forward to tomorrow not one little bit but I know it's the best thing for her at this stage. Give your Ben an extra cuddle for me everyday. Thanks.

Kim, I have been anxiously waiting for an update on Ben and praying that it would be a positive one. I am so glad to hear that he is doing ok. I will continue to keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. I will be praying that the surgery goes well. Retrievers are a most loving and tough breed, they will endure the worst kind of pain and muscle through it all the while waggin' away. I am sure that Ben will recover fully from this, it is just going to take time. I look forward to seeing Ben back in action on his blog. Hang in there, lots of love coming your way...

December 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJaci
