Make 2011 The Best Year Yet

used vintage pale texture above

Hello Lovelies

How are you?

It's time to get back on at the Café...  back to focusing on art, inspiration, creativity and making our dreams come true...

I know that's quite the statement!!  But it's totally what I want to share here.  And I'm all about intentions... Stating our intentions is the first step to getting them done!

So.... today I really wanna talk about 2011....and the whole ONE WORD idea!!

Have you picked your word?

I have....  I'm super excited about this!!  I can't even tell you!!

So are you ready?  Drumroll Please.....      wait for it...wait for it.....  ready?

My one little word for 2011 is BUILD.

Yeppers...  I want to BUILD my relationships, my business, my life, my knowledge, my ideas, my list, my portfolio....  BUILD... i could go on and on!!

And here's the thing... up until yesterday... I was BLANK... okay not blank... I did have a few words... but honestly they just weren't screaming.... pick me.... I'm the word you need for 2011....

When I choose my word SOAR in 2010... I knew beyond a doubt...that SOAR was my word...  my perfect word for 2010.  It was crystal clear.... And I feel exactly like that about BUILD!

And although 2010 was a year of great loss ... (the loss of Andy and the passing of my Aunt) it was truly the most gifted year of my life.... And I believe I owe that to a year of solid intentions...and declaring it... my year to SOAR.

I wanted to share with my word for 2011 came to me.... cause it is pretty darn cool.

I was doing my 'morning pages' per The Artist's Way..... and I decided I would simply start writing ...and see what came.  I reflected on 2010 and wrote about it... the good, the bad, the ugly....  I then considered what I wanted out of 2011...wrote it out...just really scratchy....nothing deep or profound...just let it flow onto the page...  and then I reread it....  and as I pondered my hopes for 2011... my word simply revealed itself....

So, I have put together a little 5 part exercise...based on how I came to my one little word....  perhaps it may help you..... Grab a pen and some paper... or if you must... open up a blank document and just start typing....But do this with intention.

Like 'Dear One Word... please reveal yourself' kind of intention.

Take your time...  Set aside some quiet time.... uninterrupted....

Trust me...this could be the BEST GIFT you ever give yourself!

  1. What totally rocked in 2010?  What awesome things did you accomplish?  What did you love most about 2010?  What one thing stands out as WOW... that was amazing?  Enjoy the process of celebrating all of it!
  2. What totally sucked in 2010?  Get it out there....  write it down...KNOW you don't wanna go there again....and then simply....LET IT GO!  Poof.... it's said and done... you did it... it happened... it's over...  you may even want to make this a bit of a ritual.... like write it on a separate page ...then rip it up!!  throw it in the trash... Burn it...  okay... use caution .... we don't want any fires....
  3. What do you want to see happen in 2011?  Get healthy? Get a new job? Start a Business? Learn to paint?  Figure out your camera?  Live a creative life?  Pay off your bills? Travel? Fall in love?  Have a baby?  List whatever comes to mind..... good stuff!! Don't be scared to acknowledge your hopes and dreams.  After all...  that's the first step to making them a reality.  Let yourself go there!  Don't worry about the how... just allow yourself to dream... dream BIG....
  4. Now really look at those goals... really study them....say them out loud.... ponder them... Can you come up with one word or perhaps several that encompass your dreams for 2011? Write the word or words down.  If you have more than one word... say the words out loud... go back to your dreams for the year....and see what works best? Still can't come up with a word...  walk away.... come back later...  Be sure your mind is set on the intention of gifting yourself with the perfect ONE WORD for 2011.

That's it...that's all....  :)

Okey doke.... here's a few inspiring words to get your mojo going......something to wet your palette.....Get you thinking.

Texture Time

I have a sweet set of Tuesday Textures for you... this Wednesday.  :)

I'm really, really loving these handpainted babies....  Good stuff...

corrugated grunge, faved and vintage pale...

Made with love.... Ben at my feet while I layered and painted, and spattered and glued... 'sigh'

Wanna see them in action?

I rec'd a beautiful gift from my aunt this Christmas.  A shoebox full of beautiful antique postcards....

What I love the most about them... is the beautiful hand writing... I used today's textures on all of well as on the winter image at the top of the post...  I set the blend mode to soft light on each of the images...  for a soft and subtle effect.

used faved on this image - love the texture edges

love the worn edge the corrugated grunge created

a soft and subtle effect using vintage pale

My word for 2010 was EMBRACE as I tried to celebrate each day, good and bad. I plan to follow your steps as I finalize 2011's word, but I have narrowed it down to 3- PRESENCE (as a reminder to live in the moment) PATIENCE (I have 2 teens!) or ADVENTURE (for the big trip I'm planning with friends this year). Thanks for helping me focus my intentions, and Happy New Year!

I am thinking...expand.

Expand our business, expand on what I have already learned about photography and Photoshop, expand my patience, expand it all.

Thank you for being a constant inspiration! I am insanely jealous of the box of postcards! They are gorgeous. Thank you for sharing them!

You just helped me find my word - it came out of nowhere. LIVE. That is my word. I want to start living fully instead of just going through the daily motions. Many thanks and happy New Year!!

My word is Organize! I have LOTS of stuff that needs sifting through - mind, body, home - and this is the year to get it all in order! Congrats on your word choice - I love it!

Isn't neat when a word grabs you? So often I will approach the name finding in a cerebral way with process writing as you have suggested. This is a great way to loosen up and get the words flying. This year I worked more intuitively and asked the word to find me. Within the day it struck my mind. My word for 2011 is LOVE. Throughout the year I will be exploring the many concepts and forms of this word beginning with truly loving me and then radiating it in all things from my work to those whom I interact with. Cheers to a year of building your dreams and making them a reality!

My word for 2011 is "Aspire" I shall aspire to be more than I have, and all that I want to be, starting in 2011. It's going to be a GREAT! year.

December 29, 2010 | Unregistered Commentercarol

My word for 2010 was intention and it proved to be a great choice. I've been much more intentional about how I spend my time. For 2011 the word is finish, as in finish all those albums and projects and classes that have been started in the last 5 years and not finished. In the next few days, I'm planning on making a list of all those things I'd like to finish. In addition, before I embark on anything new I'll be considering how that might impact my ability to finish what I've started. One disclaimer, I am signed up for your Photoshop course in January! :-)

This is my first time choosing a word for the year, so it was a little bit daunting. But just came to me--came to me through my remembering a favorite quotation. The quote is from E. M. Forster's "Howards End":

"Only connect. That was the whole of her sermon. Only connect the prose and the passion and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Only connect...."

So my word for 2011 is CONNECT. Connect with myself, with my family, my dogs, my friends, my work, my art, my joys, my pains, my.....well, you get the idea. Only connect.

I'm also new to the cafe and your textures, and I'm loving them all. Hoping for the very best for Ben--love the photo of him in his playpen!

My word for 2011 is *BETTER*. It's the one word that keeps coming back to me.

Better mother.
Better wife.
Better person.
Better everything.

Beautiful postcards!

December 29, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbeth

Love reading everyone's words for 2011 and I wish all of you the very best for the new year. I chose my word a couple of weeks ago and it still seems as perfect for me tonight as it did the day it came to me. 2010 has been a year of menopausal changes for me and I have spent most of it just going with the flow of my emotions and the changes in my body. I'm through with the foggy-brain I've been experiencing and ready to move on to the next chapter of my life. The word I've chosen is "Focus" and I've also chosen 12 other words that inspire me to focus on each month. I know the power of one little word, and I'm anxious to see what happens in this new year. Blessings to you Kim and to all of your readers. It's a fine group of followers you've gathered here! :)

Hi Kim. My word for 2011 is Embrace [who I am]. I've chosen a word for the past 3 years and this year my word picked me and the time to be chosen. I would not have been ready for this particular OLW until now. I'm excited for the seemingly endless possibilities of a new year.

I'm starting a One Little Word | Captured weekly photography challenge on Sat. Jan 1. Intrigued enough for more info? Click here

I would love to have you join!

Beautiful textures :)

I am so happy you helped me think on my word now.
My word for 2011 is Organise.
Just deciding on it has made me feel a sense of ease and anticipation. I have added a photo to my word which I plan to use as my screen saver to keep it in mind.
Please drop by my post if you have time, would love to have you share your word there too.

Thanks Kim, for more beautiful textures, and it is fantastic to hear that Ben is improving and doing well. I am still thinking on my WORD for 2011. I have several in mind, but haven't narrowed it down to just one. Thanks again for all your wonderful inspiration. Have a Happy New Year and may 2011 be your best year yet.

December 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDeanna

Thank you so much Kim! I'm also a morning pages journaler and just before I sat down to write this AM I saw this email and was inclined to read it. So glad I did! I've been pondering my word for 2011 over the last week or so and quite a few seemed good but not just quite right. I did the exercise you described above and as I was looking back over a list of words I compiled and picking out the ones that I was drawn to the word came to me~Clarity! I've never chosen a word for the year and I believe strongly in the power of setting your intentions so I'm now very excited to see what clarity comes to me in the new year. I'll also be sharing this word and a link to your writing exercise on my blog tomorrow. Best to you for the new year and thanks for the words and beauty you share.

December 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

Kim...Thank you for this exercise, I thought about my word for quite a few days then thought I'd sleep on it and the answer would come and it certainly did loud and clear. The word that was chosen for me in my dreams was believe in my self, to believe in the goodness of others, to believe in the joys that life has to offer..I suffer from SAD at this time of year and to be positive is a real struggle during these grey thank you..I now have my word for 2011..

Have a Wonderful year ahead I think two eleven will be heaven..Happy New Year..

December 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Hi Kim, so glad to hear Ben is doing better. My word for "2011" is Hope. Have a great day and Happy New Year!

December 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

My word has been saying pick me ever since I started blogging, but I know it will not be an easy word. For 2011 is will be Believe. I thought Joy this year would be easy, but each word always reveals the negative side too. Believe for me "I do beleive" will be a test of sorts. Lovely textures, by the way. So very happy Ben is feeling better.

December 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMarilyn

Just found you today, seems like the perfect day to find you! Thanks so much for the inspiration and focus, hey wait, maybe my word is FOCUS, Focus on what really matters to ME and not the rest of the world. Thanks!

December 31, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFinding Home

I am late with this, but my word is "GIVE" because I have been given so much, and although I do give a lot, I want to GIVE more deeply, as in charity work, and I also want to learn how to "GIVE" to myself, because I just don't give myself enough love.

January 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLynn

Thank you so much for this so helps focus my mind...and I have been surprised by how emotional I felt as I went through the steps!
My word is - in myself and trust in the world... word was nearly confidence...but trust is deeper and bigger...and somehow embraces some of the other words that came to growth...confidence...and strength...
If I can trust myself and the world then I can find the ways to do what I need to do....and that way my dreams will come closer....
...and I just know this word is going to last me the whole year!

January 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDebs

I've waffled a little on my word.....but it keeps coming back into my mind and I think it's word for 2011 is REACH.....reach for new goals, new projects, new self discovery and improvement, new dreams, new joys.....yes, REACH is more and more appropriate......I love it more by the hour. :) Have a wonderful new year and {hugs} to Mr. Ben.

Abundance. Love this word - it will guide me through the next decade.

January 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarolyn

I've never chosen a word for the year...but this came to me quickly as I read your is simply "DO". Action oriented. Uncomplicated by fear. Unattached from results. I've read the books, written the goals, bought the supplies. Now what will I DO with them? Thank you for DOing so much for us!

January 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPat

I love this idea. I've never really given it any thought before now to have "a word" for the year.

After some reflection, my word for 2011 is CREATE.

Create beautiful images. Create love. Create special moments. Create passion. Create a wonderful life.

Thank you!! (I laughed when I looked up the dictionary definition and read the British definition is "to make a fuss.")

Thank you Kim for introducing me to the idea of One Word. I love it. My word for 2011 is focus. Focus on what is happening at the moment without thinking of anything else, checking email or letting my mind rush on to the next task at hand. I also intend to focus on my photography and editing skills thanks to your awesome classes!
hugs to you and Ben

Thank you for inspiring me to choose a word this year. I thought about doing it last year, but never followed through. After reading your post last week, doing the exercise you suggested, I've finally settled on my word for the year, which is Focus.
