Desperately Seeking Creative Connection

Hello, how are you?

I hope well. I'm still fighting the blahs.... pulling inward.... the weather isn't helping... Snow on April 30th...for my birthday? Seriously.....?? I know...I know... it's only a little bad weather...I have much to be thankful for... Yes indeed....

Two things I know for sure....

I'm desperate for sunshine....and creative connection...... A little face to face chat....  There's nothing like connection to get a person back on track. Quite honestly my real-life creative friends are few and far between around here. I had no idea how important connection was ... until I attended Camp Shutter Sisters in 2011. It was like a whole new world opened up many women... just like me..... I had no idea!! And since then, I've longed for more. A few trips a year is no longer cutting it.

I've been working on my Birthday list (45 wishes)... one of the things on my list is build creative friendships right here at home. I'm positive there's gotta be other creatives feeling the need to connect as well.

But in the meantime.....I thought there may be someone else out there feeling the same way. We are so lucky these days to be able to connect through our screens.

Would you be interested in a little skype chat with yours truly? If so, please leave a comment below. I'm not sure how many may be interested...but I would love to talk with a few of you..... one on one.... via skype.

Let me know if you are interested by leaving a comment below......

Also I have a new course in mind.... a Lightroom creative pro-cessing class.... start to finish edits.....sharing ideas behind the image set-up and my editing choices.... a no-rules approach.... just following the creative heart/eye....What do you think? a possibility? Interested? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Oh dear, before I go... I almost forgot... the winner of the Cloth & Paper Collection is the lovely Kim Stevens. Drop me a note my friend and I will hook you up.

Okay friends.... looking forward to finding my way back here....

If you are interested in a creative connect skype conversation... leave me a comment below.

I'd also love to hear your thoughts on my LR editing class ideas as well.... Do tell!

Always.... a truly grateful heart.

Hi Kim, The new course sounds great. Wow connecting by Skype, you could see me at my worst, lol, but yes I could do this.

Kim, You are a gal after my heart. Your words on needing more creative like minded friends really touched me as I have been thinking the same thing....I would love to connect with you....

I love the idea of the Lightroom class....I am taking your class Picture Process for elements 11 and I am learning so much...You really have a way of teaching that makes things easier to understand....

Hugs, Nancy

I would love, love, love to chat with you! How cool would that be? You just never know where it might lead!! But, a warning...I look so terrible on Skype...

Kim, Developing creative friendships in your own backyard is a wish that must come true for you. Just this last year I discovered a friend who lives only 3 miles from my home - she is a writer/photographer and I am a photographer/writer. Both of our lives have been so enhanced by this friendship. We've shared artist's dates, road trips, and meals. We exchange ideas for books, creative projects, and advice. We give and we take from each other in a lovely way. You will find these friends nearby, maybe just around the corner. In the meantime, we who love your work, your encouragement, and your teaching will line up to talk with you. Count me in as a potential Skype friend.

Timed right for this post:
Today I had 3 friends over for a creative lunch chat.....3 hours of camera and computer sharing....lovely! This is a new venture for me this past year, and has become such a treasure. I simply offered the idea of a camera group to one other person that I knew had a passion for photography, then she invited another, and so did i! We call our group F.O.C.U.S = (four old chicks usually snapping!) We've gone on a few excursions, and are planning more!

While they were here today...UPS brought my new camera!!! It was a party for sure! Great timing.

Reach just one other person with a camera....and you will grow a fun group!

(skype scares me....not sure why? I do it reluctantly with grandkids....feels awkward. I should get used to it, hey?)

What fun to have a new class on the horizon from Kim, I will be all over it.

I don't have Skype anymore, took it off my computer when I got my iPad. I can Facetime but not Skype.

You know that I would love to Skype with you, or FaceTime. I have both. The funny thing is that I was just having this conversation with my personal trainer this week. I said "now that I have eliminated all my negative friends that just make me feel guilty that I am allowed the privilege of not having to work and follow my creative aspirations, where in the heck do I find positive creative people?" She said they are few and far between but they are out there and I need to work on seeking them out.

What a joy it would be to Skype or FaceTime with you, talented one! The class sounds lovely as well. You are such a giver and great teacher. Thanks for all you do. :)

Lovely photos, Kim! Skype is a great way to connect with people near and far, isn't it? :)
Happy belated birthday!! xo

Are you kidding? Skype with you! That would be wonderful! I know exactly what you mean about needing that connection with others who get you. I, too, feel kind of "out there"--not quite in sync with everyone else, not having a real creative support group nearby, others who get it that you have to be creating.

I love the idea of the processing class as well. Whether I could take it or not would be another story because of finances (still recovering financially from the last fire, surgeries to repair injuries, and all that kind of thing--another reason I need a creative support group!).

I'd be interested in the details of a Skype session!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Bless you for ALL you do. From sunny Santa Monica. The heat heralds the start of what could be another nasty fire season. It's always something! I'm not near fires, thankfully. ENJOY your Birth Day! Yay!

Oh I think you have been hearing my dreams. I have said all winter if only I could talk to Kim and find out how she does things. I am one girl out in the middle of no where, and often feel like my only true friend is my camera. I have joined the local photography group, but its alot of people just wanting me to teach them for free. I want to connect and share ideas, dreams. A Skype date with you. YES!
Maybe we can do it via gotomeeting and a few of us can join in at once. Just an idea. But I am so up for a visit with you. Not sure if you know this or not. I think you are so awesome. The entire story!
Thoughts on a new course. Oh course! Anything you teach will be amazing. Make sure it feeds your soul. Honour yourself first. Take care. Big hugs to you! I feel so bad that you are feeling sad.

I would be interested in a creative LR class. I hope spring come soon, Happy Birthday!

Happy happy birthday, Kim! Even though I live in FL, the sunshine state, its been rather cloudy and dreary here as well. Just no snow! Looking forward to some sunshine. It sparks my creative mind. Hope you get some sun as well.

Connection. Yes. That word really resonates with me right now. It's a lifeline when we're feeling isolated and shut in... and just blah. Maybe it's the weather, and maybe it's just circumstances that have conspired to keep us feeling creatively (emotionally, spiritually, mentally, physically) stifled. But connection is the key. There's something so comforting about like-mindedness... knowing the person on the other end of the line knows too.

I haven't been out with my camera in I can't remember how long. And it's not the weather that's keeping me isolated. I hope you find connection. I hope I find it too. I hope we all do.
May 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJan
Always depending on money I would love this. I too have no local creative friends. I try not to make myself too obtrusive on the Internet. But there are a lot of women over the years who I would like to know better. I think it would be great fun and a real boost to creativity. I would love some honest criticism.

I live in Winnipeg and I know what you mean about this winter never ending! Sheesh! (It's my first Manitoba winter, too - quite an introduction, eh?!) But here's a positive sign: I was walking in the park today and saw the first spring flowers. Hopefully the blue skies and flowers will clear up the winter blahs.

I agree with you about the importance of creative connections. I used to get together with friends for "Craft Day" from time to time and I miss that since moving here. I do have a photographer friend that I shoot with once in a while and that's fun. I really enjoy my internet connections, too.

Skyping with you sounds interesting (although I don't know how to use Skype)!

And if you're ever in Winnipeg .... maybe a cup of tea, a photo walk in the park???

Happy Birthday!

Hi Kim,
April really is the cruelest month... We've waited so long for winter to end, and in theory it should be a month of Sundays. But really it's a lot of mud and slush, and sometimes a snowstorm or two...reddish buds just beginning to form on the trees...
May is much kinder. Hoping you feel better soon.

A Lightroom processing course would be very interesting to me.
I use lr a lot, but find it difficult to do creative processing with it. Mostly I just use it for exposure corrections and the like...
Would be nice to see what else can be done...

Hi Kimmiie sweetee! I hear you on the friends! I have lived here in the Charleston area for ten years now and really not a true, good friend in sight anywhere and I really miss the friendship. I would be scared to do the skype thing because when I did it once with my brother with some kind of connection my face looked like i was looking through a pepsi bottle LOL. (I'm not sure if it was skype)

Anyway, I am sure you will find someone not as shy as me to talk to, and with your weather up there in Canada, you are very welcome to come and visit me in South Carolina! Pack your camera and come on down sometime! I promise I wouldn't look like I was talking to you through a pepsi bottle in person lol

Sending warm weather and warm huggs up your way ♥

It's your birthday? Happy, happy birthday Kim! It's my birthday month too- I believe in being good to myself all month long! The LR class sounds wonderful! Especially the creative part! And a Skype chat with Kim? Are you kidding? That would be so cool! I would love some creative connection time!
May 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMelinda
Yes, yes to the class. Think the time difference would rule out Skyping - but what a fabulous idea - you are so generous with your time.

Love the idea of a new Lightroom course can't get enough of it... And would love to chat Kim my Skype connection is pretty good..... I know how difficult it is to find friends at home that "get me" most of my creative conversation goes on via the Groupies and the courses I take online...It can make you feel isolated especially with a time difference.....hugs

Hi Kim,

I left my creative buddy (and best friend) when I moved from Greece to the UK last year . . .we both miss our photo outings on the island.. . .so I would love a chance to "meet". Sounds like a splendid idea.

I hate the "blahs" they're something I've experienced all of my life from time to time so hugs coming your way . . Teresa x

Hope you had a great birthday. :) I've been thinking a lot about creative connections lately and how to introduce more into my life so I'm absolutely up for a skyping, what a great idea.
Love the LR course idea too. I loved roundtrip but there is sooooo much in LR I still feel I'm not using it to it's full potential.
May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBecs
Happy Belated Birthday! It is so cool that you came up with this idea..At present I am still working 4 days a week and truly treasure my "alone" time when weekends come but I may retire next year and my big fear is not having social connections with people who share my interests. So, although I won't have time for Skyping right now, I sure am interested in it for the future and you just may find a way to start a whole new trend. I love the gotomeeting idea, getting several people together at one time.
I wish I had time for your recent and coming courses...worst thing is I probably could use it right now. I was just contacted from a book publisher about putting together a photo book of my squirrels and I need to re-edit some (probably many) of the images. I would love to add some textures but am trying to keep them as "natural" as possible because people already think I have photoshopped my little squirrels into the "sets". I am so excited about the book idea though...

We all LOVE your work and your creativity and someday I want to join in more of your courses and projects...All the best!

Happy Birthday my friend ... I made you a picture on April 30 just for it but I should have sent it through Flickr mail ... ugh, I knew you were busy (when are you not) ... so just know you are wished such good things ... I will go back and send it to you. Last week, I was thinking ... it must be Kim's bday any time now ... I bet she's going to do her 45 things list, and low and behold I read it here. I thought that was such a good idea last year and had planned on doing it for me ... but by the time I turned 59 I forgot about it. hehe. Too much on my mind.

Okay now, I certainly know the blahs can get a pretty good hold on you and I totally understand about the connection with other creatives to boost your whole spirit. Several years ago while my husband was recovering from a life threatening illness, we had to face some extreme tough times. It meant for me that all my energy was focused on him. However I needed my camera to take me away from it all and used it as my stress relief.

I have my best friend who is an artist (painter) and whom I have know just about my entire life but she lives about 70 miles from me and her plate is full as well. But when we need an outlet to just let go, we get on the phone to each other and when our ... three hour conversations are over with ... we both feel lighter and ready to conquer the world.

I also was introduced to my camera club five years ago by a friend who saw that I needed some 'connections' to help me get out of the rut created by the situation we were in. That has helped me tremendously and along with the others in my club of over 130, we feed off each other. There are also many members new to photography and it really is nice to share knowledge with them. I don't mind in the least teaching what I know to help them find their creative flow... we've become good friends. I ended up on the executive within six months of joining as the Print Chair and have been ever since.
I've managed to become a member of CAPA through them, I've taken the CAPA judging course, I have entered into competition, something that never occurred to me before. Winning a medal once in awhile does a lot to boost confidence I tell ya ... because I finally realized my work was valued. Other people were seeing it besides my friends, hubby and kids.
We've had the most wonderful photographers come and speak at the club, teach us, share their experiences, and there are club outings to all sorts of places. This kind of stuff helps you grow your craft and inspires you constantly.

Through them, I gained things I would never have otherwise ....
My most prized memory and moment of creative growth came from meeting Freeman Patterson in person and being one of ten people in the club to have a one on one master class seminar with him the day before our club put on a spectacular keynote speaking event by him. We filled the theater ... 300 people from all over BC. We were truly inspired and feel so privileged to have had the opportunity. It was magical, he is a fabulous person, wise and funny .... I'm sure you have some of his books. Many photographers that I know were inspired to be photographers by his style, I'm one of them ... and I must mention he still shoots film/slide. He is now 75 years old and his newer books include collaborative with Andre Gallant as the Digital inspiration. Hopefully one day we'll have both of them out here. He lives in New Brunswick.

You have been going through some pretty deep stuff lately and basically sweetie, family stuff will always throw a pebble into the creative flow. Weather ... well, it truly does a great job to bring us down when it's been too, snowy, rainy, gloomy outside for days, weeks, months on end. We all need the Sun to make all that go away. In general ... this year has been horrible back east for the amount of snow ... I think it's making up for last year when the east seemed void of winter like they normally get. You, my fiend in Sask, ... Calgary and even here up in the interior have all had more snow this year. Us ... just this past week has been having freak snow storms up the main highways about two hundred miles north of me in the mountains, when the week before it was like spring. Ma nature is having her way with all of us this year. We had months of rain and cloud cover ... the least amount of sunny days in history I think it was from November to the end of Feb ... what the hey?
So yes having some sunshine (we've had a few days this week ... ) does so much for the Psyche.

I get off the subject don't I ...?? Anyway, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have a Skype conversation with you, I have to learn how to use it ... better find my webcam, hmm. I often think of calling you, then don't because of time of day or feel you are probably so busy with all of the classes you teach. I think it would be good for you to converse this way as there is something about the human voice, laughter, sharing ... etc., that you can't get feed back from by just doing your classes speaking to your computer.

As for a Creative Lightroom class .... I am like you ... IN LOVE with the programs. I get it! Oh and I downloaded the Beta LR5 and .... well now when it comes out in June I'll have to buy the full version ... at least upgrading isn't as expensive as the first. I think I read you also downloaded it ... however, You seem to digest all of CS6 and LR much better than I ... maybe it's an age thing or that I get too scrambled and overwhelmed with all that goes on around me. I need to pace myself and take my own advice. Make more notes. Anyways, I love How you teach Kim, ... you are a natural teacher and communicator. You are loved by many and I think it's because you know how to bring out the creative thought process in people. You instigate, motivate, you show them, so it's all good.

For me this and last year what you have done is get me thinking more about teaching. I am now finally able to afford to take the TEACHnow class at ( I've just begun the course ... yes another course, ... I'm full already.
My big thing was to learn how not to be scattered and forget what I want to offer, and how to put a good program together so it will leave them wanting more. I have struggled all year with it. Hopefully I'll come out of this knowing how. I found out about them sort of through you somewhere in our BL or Behind the Scenes links. Tara Mohr and TED talks ... oh my goodness ... such a world of help.

Well ... I better stop typing, it's been over an hour. I need to hit the hay and stop babbling.

I hope you are spending your birthday week doing something fun for yourself. You need to forget everyone else for even a few hours and just BE. I wish you LOVE always around you, LIGHT in your heart, and now ... CONNECTION that will lift your spirit so you may feel the radiance you have shared come back to you.

Truly ... grateful you are in my life.
xo Joy

Oh Kim, I so relate...isn't it odd how there are so many of us, yet we struggle with finding "our tribe" in our own real lives? I am in the same exact boat. I'm so grateful for the online world which has connected me with some amazing and creative women (all of who live very far away). I would love to Skype with you...I haven't Skyped before but surely it can't be too complicated, I hope? lol :)

Have a wonderful Friday - as always, your photos are absolutely lovely.

Kim, can appreciate the dilemma you are in - I live in a big addition in Florida but no ones does photography or Photoshop like I do. I could play with my photos all day long. I loved your Texturize class and have been trying to incorporate your techniques into different kinds of images. I am a huge fan of Lightroom since the beginning and try to learn everything there is about it so if you have some new creative ideas on using it, I would love to learn about it. Would love to Skype with ya too.
May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSyd Johnson
Oh!! Happy Birthday, dear you!!! I would most definitely be interested! I love Lightroom but still find it a little intimidating... You have done wonders getting me to play there more often! As for Skype time.... How awesome!! I would be so nervous... Like meeting a favorite world figure! You have been such an integral part of building my confidence in myself... Like you, finding other creatives is no easy task... I also am trying to network, but there are many out there that are guarded about letting others into their circles....
Hope your day is beautiful in every way! ((Hug))

I can so appreciate not having a creative buddy....when we moved five years ago I wasn't as in to photography as I am now. But I did leave all my friends and my church and it was hard. And being 50 it's harder to make friends I think, good ones that are genuine. I also think that connection is a vital part of our happiness, feeling wanted, and loved. Since my son got sick over a month ago I've kinda wished more than ever that I had "that" friend that I could lean on. Family is great, but just not the same thing . . . hang in there, {{hugs}} xo, Kim

Oh and EEEEK, I'm so excited to win your collection, truly thankful for your generosity! e-mailing you now...
It looks like you would have little time to yourself with all of us wanting to chat with you :) Winter is still on the ground in Saskatchewan and even for seasoned Canadians it has bee way to long. Suppose to be nice tomorrow so I'm hoping to soak in some sun as I clean flower beds along the house where the snow has resided. Have a great day!

First, the Texturize class was AWESOME! I learned so much, and I've been working in Photoshop since the first CS. Yikes! A class on Lightroom would be great! I'd be especially interested in your thoughts on the image set-up. Lastly, a creative buddy would be fantastic! Creative connections are few and far between. I'd love to chat anytime via Skype.

Hi Kim,

I've been struggling creatively for the past month or so (Actually ever since this year began). I was so excited to be a part of Beyond Beyond and the new Texturize class but every week I get you emails and leave them unopened because I have no time to absorb your lessons. My week is filled with job-seeking activities, networking and volunteering activities. I am progressing in other parts of my life but this one part seems to have stagnated and I don't like that at all.
I would love to talk to you and try to reconnect with my creative side :).
Hope you have a lovely weekend.

Have never used LR (have PSCS6) but just attended a workshop on the new beta version 5 and plan to download it and play. Would love to take a LR class with your creativity and talent!
May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCarey
The class sounds great! and right up my alley. I'm hoping for a new MacbookPro soon and will download the Beta then, if I can keep waiting that long. I'm with Nina, Skype scares me or is it that I just freak at the thought. Or I think I have nothing to offer you. but I've always felt a connection being from the north and identifying on a lot accounts. Call me a chicken. but I loved our group of 8 we did last year. But hey, I'm game, and if you are still interested in a guest post from me I should get something submitted. So many plates to juggle..... oh but I love them all..

Hi Kim,
I would! Just yesterday I was reading a book that stressed the importance of making a creative connection with others.

To be honest, this is terrifying. And raising my hand and saying “I will” is way outside of my comfort zone. I am painfully shy and terrible at small talk; I think that making a new connection would be wonderful.

I have to agree, this winter has been endless. I live in Minnesota and we’re having snow storms in May (May!) – this almost never happens. I cannot wait to have some sunshine and warmer days.

Happy birthday!
May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSheila
Happy Birthday Kim!!!

This would be so wonderful.

It's kind of funny just yesterday I said to myself....I have GOT to connect more with like minded creative people. You see I'm a lot like you in many ways. At times I too am an introvert, and without ANY friends that have a deep desire to create like I do, it can get pretty lonely. So lets put an end to all this isolation that we are all feeling and connect.

I would love to "hang out" lol
