Finding Clarity......

Hello friends,

How are you this beautiful day? I hope well.

Oh my gosh.... guess what! Spring is really here. Shorts & T-Shirt weather has arrived! Woo hoo!

I thought I'd share a few photos from this past weekend..... looks pretty peaceful, doesn't it? Trust me, this was only a small part of the weekend... there was plenty of crazy mixed in.

Anyhow, I took some time this weekend to just BE .... and wow.... I'm so excited.... The class I've been dreaming up became really clear.

It's different than my other courses.... It's exciting and scary all at the same time.

I imagine....

…..a class that let's me share my art (completely)…..from conception to the finished piece...with all the details in between.... a class that allows me to connect with the students in a virtual meeting space....feed the creative soul kind of class.

This class is called Start to Finish.

The Breakdown

from Conception (about the idea/inspiration for the shoot)... to my creative thought process... to shoot setup and composition... to all the camera setting details... to culling the shoot (why i pick the photos I pick)... and finally a complete step by step edit inside Lightroom (shared from a no-rules, non-scripted, inside my head point of view.)

Can you tell I'm bursting.....??

About Start to Finish...

First, the pace will be a little slower… more detailed… a marathon, not a sprint…..

The content will be spread out over 8 weeks.

Start to Finish lessons will post twice a week, every other week….over the course of 8 weeks, leaving a lighter;not empty ..... week in between.

The editing will take place in Lightroom.

There will be to 2 Start to Finish Lessons Every Other week. I'm talking TOTAL start to finish.....

Each lesson will include a FULL breakdown of the concept, shoot details, composition and editing pro-cess. Lessons will be posted in a private classroom on Tuesday and Friday every other week.

The in between week will include a thorough Lightroom develop module lesson..... a real roll up your sleeve breakdown. I will also critique 2 student photos via screencast each week. (no submissions=no critique)

These in between weeks will allow time to work through the material, soak up the inspiration and take the content presented for a little ride with your own ideas.

I will....

  • Share my thought process, concept/inspiration for the image/shoot in written or podcast format.
  • Show several wide angle photos and/or video of the space…drops, props, linens, reflectors used....all the details.
  • Show how I set up the shoot… direction of light, camera settings, time of day etc.
  • I will open the shoot in Lightroom…giving you a chance to see them all; the good, the bad, the so so's….. all of them. :)
  • I will talk through the culling process. I will choose a few favs and explain my choices.
  • I will walk you through a complete edit of one of the shoot photos in Lightroom, sharing lots of detailed and tricks etc.
  • Bonus: if I decide to go into Photoshop with the image to add text or texture I will include that info in a separate video for Photoshop users.
  • The in between week will include an opportunity to submit your photos for critique. Note: When I say critique (which reminds me way too much of the word critic) trust I will be kind and gentle….. I'm all about encouragement. But I will share my honest thoughts.
  • I will set up a virtual meeting space.... (through adobe connect) allowing you to chat with me and your fellow classmates, ask questions etc…in a chat format. This will be offered a few times throughout the course. You can also send in questions and I will answer as many as possible during the meeting time.
  • Summer is busy and beautiful…. we must enjoy the sunshine and warm air. However, I find summer to be a highly energized and creative season... which is why I think it's the perfect time for this class. I decided to spread the content out over 8 weeks. The material will be accessible for an additional 4 months after the 8 weeks is over. Yep, that's 6 months access.

I think that's covers most of it. Registration will open on Monday (unless otherwise posted)... if anything changes I will let you know.

Class will begin mid-June.....  I will have a registration cap on this class....I want to really connect with the students.

Okay, that's a lot......I'm so excited....

Oh I am going to be in touch with some of the lovely readers that expressed interest in connecting.... :) Watch your email for more soon.....

Before I sign off.....a little inspiration....

Absolutely stunning and I want to just sink into that photo! I can't wait for next year when my youngest will be in school all day and I will have some time to delve more deeply into all of this!! Sigh (but my baby will be growing up... ha ha mixed emotions...) This sounds like a fantastic class.

it sounds absolutely wonderful! but alas not for me at this time...I already know that summer is shaping up to be way too taxing to be able to devote the energy I would want to put into class to get the most out of it...but maybe the creativeness of that class might seep into 2B and influence some of the sessions there??? I can hope!
thanks Kim for continuing to create more avenues to discover the gifts we all have...
I'm really interested in this...

This sounds wonderful Kim. I need beginnings......and finally endings. Just wondering how much time I can devoted to all of it. See, I collect. Now I'm collecting everything Kim. Lol. I'm going to think on this for a day or two but my guess is, I'll be there, especially with all the time you are leaving the lessons up.
Your amazing.

Sounds great I hope I can register in time sometimes the time difference can be a pain !!!!!

It all sounds so exciting! But ... summertime won't work for me. I go from being an after-school grandmother to an all day grandmother. Having a 6-year old around doesn't leave a lot of time for extra creative endeavors. :-(

This new class sounds awesome Kim but I can't make it this time. I'll be down in Southern California for wedding and babysitting duties. A month in total. Not that I'm complaining at all but dare I hope that this class and Beyond Beyond will be repeated in the fall? If so, I'm in!

OH EXCITEMENT!!! I can not resist a Kim class. I am always learn so much your classes, even when I feel like I know quite a bit you always teach me something new and also help me to look at something in a new way. I like the idea of a class cap on size. So much easier to connect with fellow classmates that way.

This class sounds very, very interesting. I however, don't have Lightroom, but Aperture (and PSE10). I don't think this would be a problem as the most important thing for me is to learn more about shooting pictures.

Kim, I wish you the very very best with this class, and if I knew the first thing about Lightroom, I'd sign up. As it is, I'll wait for your other courses :)

This sounds very exciting, Kim, and something I could really use. I just get a bit nervous when I hear "drops, props, linens" - do I need a studio space to take this class? One of the reasons I haven't been able to do some of the Beyond lessons is a lack of a studio-type space with the window lighting that makes your photos (and those of so many other Beyonders) so magical.

I would love to sign up but I want to make sure I have the right kind of space so I'm not taking a spot that another Beyonder would be better able to use.

Oh boy ... I want to take this so bad because I simply love how you teach your craft. I'm on the fence though because I am behind in all my other Kim classes while life happens around me. I would love to take this ... but I have a feeling I may give up my spot to someone more in need of your wonderful gift.
While I am trying to put together my own classes (I'm not the person copying your blog, you know that) ... I hate missing what you're up to and this sounds so YOU. I know it will be fantastic and energetic.

It seems you are finding such ease in putting together these amazing classes ... and to tell you the truth, that part is what I need; ... the putting together part. I'm taking the TeachNOW course which was shown to me inadvertently by you through links in the Behind the Scenes course with all that had to offer. It's a wonderful course, so pumped and inspiring and really provides the necessary 'mindset' to pull up the confidence needed to Teach and share so that the students leave wanting more ... this gift you have already my dear. I had to wait to take the course until I had the $$ to do so. I don't know why I've been so stuck. I need to write my morning pages again ...

I'm good at teaching on the spot tutorials in person, giving tips in some form to my colleagues etc. but need the longer term advice on how to organize my classes so I'm not all over the place. This course does that and I tell you, from all of the classes I've taken from you, I am taking away a wealth of information from your delightful way of teaching as well.

So, we'll see, like I said, I hate missing a Kim course because I love the connections that naturally come from it. I LOVE love love Lightroom4 and after downloading the LR5 Beta ... I'm getting it soon as it's released. (Supposed to be in June) Adobe is so good, always improving upon the best parts of their programs and I totally know what you mean when you speak of a love affair with these wonderful programs.

Well, before this becomes another book ... =0) , I better go get some real work done although I'd much rather sit here and create. I hope I will be able to take this course but if I don't ... more power to you sweetie ... Your Peeps love you and they are certainly better off for following you on your adventure. It just keeps getting better. I'm excited for you.

I must say in closing, each individual that takes a course from you, comes away a better person for having done so.
It's more than so much more than LR or Photoshop ... love you girl!

... xo Joy
