Our Story

In a second….everything can change.

I was face timing with a friend last Wednesday….. when the phone rang….. John's doctor called….
from there our sweet simple life began to spin.

The news…. John has a high white blood cell count and needs to be admitted into hospital immediately. A bone marrow biopsy the following day confirmed a diagnosis of Leukaemia. The hospital 3 hours from home….will be his new home for the next several months……

The doctors believe they discovered it early and he will make a full recovery.

He's been feeling 'off' for several months… since January I've been saying something wasn't right, his colour was funny… kind of yellowish. He finally went to the doctor last Tuesday. We were thinking Great… maybe they will get to the bottom of this.

Who knew!!

John has been diagnosed with Leukemia (ALL). The treatment is very intense and in hospital. He started chemo on Friday. He will be in hospital for 3-5 week stints with a few days off in between and then back again for another round. This will continue for several months…

They did catch it early and the doctors are confident he will beat this thing.

In the meantime.....Bye bye summer 2013.

It makes me so sad… John loves his yard and he had big plans for this summer… one minute he was cutting grass at his moms…next we were rushing to Winnipeg.

I'm not sure how this will all work out…. I do know, John's job is to get better. I will juggle time between home and the hospital. I'm thankful I can bring much of my work with me. It's going to be tricky for sure…. but we will make it through.

Ben is at my mom and dads…and with Brett. I'm so thankful for their help. It would be really difficult being here knowing Ben was upset. You know how pathetic I am about him…. 'sigh'…

As for my work…. I will find my way … I am going to step back this week….take some time. Please bare with me as we find our footing.

My upcoming class, Start to Finish will run as planned… the schedule may be a little less structured, but I am determined to deliver… 2B, Texture Tuesday, Friday Finds etc….will be back on track next week. John is adamant that I move forward and continue my work.

I am in Winnipeg with John this week, then home for a bit…. I am thinking I will split the time in half…. We shall see. I know I am here til Friday….from there… I have no idea….

Deep breaths….. big gratitude for everything good in our life… family, friendships, all of you, love, faith….hope...exceptional hospital care.... We have so much to be thankful for. We are truly blessed.

I will be back to this space very soon….. we are so grateful for all of your love and support.

Until next time.... so much gratitude.

p.s. I posted the uptop quote a week or 2 ago...who knew? so powerful....  i will hold it close on this journey.

Dear Kim,
You are so completely in my thoughts right now. I actually thought this was maybe a reprint of the story about your son. I hadn't commented on that post because there were so many other posts. I felt such a kinship with you as I read your story, having gone through much the same thing.
John will need to draw strength from you, so please take good care of yourself. All of us that feel like we have the privilege of sitting down with you at your kitchen table every day will still be here for you. No need to worry.
With love and many warm hugs,

Holding you up before our Heavenly Father...all of you. My mother's favorite song was "If we could see beyond today as God can see..." You may not understand it all...but we never grow and stretch when the way is easy. Praying for John's recovery and you'll let the God of heaven be your strength and all He promises to be. Read your "One Thousand Gifts" again and remember that ALL is grace. You are loved, my dear.

Much love,

Sending healing thoughts! I know how illness can throw a monkey wrench into our lives. Suddenly, the situation becomes all consuming and replaces everything that we are familiar with. Keep each other close. Remember to laugh, love and live. Hugs to all.

deep breaths. the breath of our prayers for you reach lovingly concerned ears. nothing is for nothing --- this i have learned and not without an ocean of tears and maybe even a few angry fists raised to heaven.

but sometime the journey requires a walk in the dark where nothing but faith fills the space between steps. we never walk this alone.

So sorry you and your family have to go through this Kim. The best advice I can give you is to take very good care of yourself first. You can't help John if you don't look after YOU. You, John, and your family will be in our prayers. You have so many people out here who love you and there is strength in numbers. I'm sure everyone will be sending prayers and healing thoughts your way. Don't fret about your work. Just do what you feel you must right now.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

All I can say is how sorry I am to hear this news. I'll keep you, John and your family in my prayers. The important thing is that John is getting the care he needs but please PLEASE dear Kim, take just as good care of yourself! Don't worry about your classes, everyone that knows and loves you will be right here waiting when YOU'RE ready and able. I'm glad that Ben has a place to stay so you won't worry about him too.

Dearest Kim,

I am so deeply saddened to hear of this news. I can't imagine what you and your family must be feeling and going through. I do know Kim that you are one of the most positive, gracious and strong people I know and that you'll be a wonderful support to John through his treatments.

I'm sure there will be a long line of family and friends ready to support both of you and I know I speak for everyone when I say, we your faithful fans and followers, simply want you to take the time you need without worrying about anything else as you move through all of this. It's so easy to get caught up in the demands of each moment, the desire to keep life as "normal" as possible. Be gentle to yourself dear friend as you try to navigate all of this.

"But we can't live in the light all of the time. You have to take whatever light you can hold into the dark with you." Libba

Keeping you and your family in my thoughts as always - love and hugs to you Kim.

Kim, praying for you all to be covered by the Peace of Christ, which is beyond all understanding. I have not personally walked in your specific circumstances. but have certainly experienced challenges of my own and my heart is with you and your family at this time. Seasons come and seasons go and this season will have its own ending in time. For now, treasure the sweet moments, hand the tough times over to GOD and find the joy in every day.

Thank you for sharing this part of yourself and your life with us and know that we are ALWAYS here to listen, encourage and pray.

Hugs & Blessings -- kimB from AK

I am sorry to hear this news, but so grateful that they caught it early!! As one who has been back and forth to the childrens hospital for the last nine weeks, I can say that you absolutely need to take care of yourself. I'm finding I haven't done a very good job at that and it is vital to refresh and restore your reserves for stressful times. Keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers! xo
